Pirelli have been apparently discussing bringing back qualifying tyres for next years formula 1 championships.
The last time it was used was back in 1991, 20 years ago!
“We’ve put the idea of qualifying tyres to the teams and we will get their feedback,” Hembery said.
“If they don’t want to do it, we won’t do it.
“If they don’t want to do it, we won’t do it.
“It might be a step too far for next year and too much for the teams to take on board, but it’s something that we have offered.
“We know that the public likes the idea of a qualifying tyre and drivers rather like the thrill of having a qualifying tyre and chasing that ultimate lap.
“It’s a one-shot, zero-mistake tyre so it builds up the tension. It would be an extreme, one-hit tyre, two seconds a lap quicker.”
Hembery believes short-life tyres could enhance the spectacle and recast qualifying as more of a stand-alone event.
“Qualifying has been interesting this year, but qualifying tyres would create a lot more interest,” he argued.
“It’s a question of whether you want to make qualifying a central event. There is some scope for refinement of Saturday.
“[FIA president] Jean Todt has made some suggestions about having points for qualifying or even a qualifying championship. I can understand why he said that because it creates an event in itself.”
