BMW skinny tyres and wheels

A BMW with skinny wheels and tyres?
You’d better believe it because not only do they save weight, they also provide improved rolling resistance and aerodynamics – and they are going to be fitted to BMW’s first series-produced electric car to help improve range.
Called the i3, this urban runabout will be powered by a 125kW electric motor that allows it to accelerate from 0-62mph in less than eight seconds.

Tyre Tip #2 - Tyre Pressure

You should regularly carry out checks on your car tyre pressures, you can find the recommended car tyre pressure in your vehicle handbook.
If you are carrying extra weight in your vehicle it generally requires a higher car tyre pressure setting, so look out for the ‘loaded’ pressure settings if you are using your vehicle to carry extra weight.
There are 3 important reasons as to why keeping your tyre pressure correct and they are: Being over inflated can cause poor vehicle handling and under inflated can cause them to over heat and can make the tyres wear too quickly.
Next is that it can end up costing you money! Your thinking oh yeah new tyres, but why? Because when the tyres aren’t the correct tyre pressure they take the bumps from kurbs, pot holes etc and they are worse than they could be than when they are the correct pressure.
Lastly mileage, if you keep them correct then you will clock up more miles than when they are incorrect.
Most tyre pumps you can find at petrol garages, you just use the air hose and fill up – but check your correct pressure for your car first in the handbook and then set it to the correct ammount of air on the controls, if you need any help still then just ask an assistant at the garage

Tyre Tip #1 - Spare Tyre

Include your spare tyre on a regular vehicle tyre pressure check. If your vehicle’s spare tyre is a ‘space saver’, then please read the label for usage and directions.
If you are not sure if your spare tyre requires special fitting instruction or you would like some advice, please contact us for help and assistance!
The spare tyre provides the means to get you on your way if one of your car tyres fail.
You never know when a tyre may get a puncture, so the spare tyre is as important as those being used every time you use your vehicle

Button and Hamilton

Winning Jenson Button made the right call while team mate Lewis Hamilton didn’t get it so right and found out the hard way at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
“The team said we are going to pit for intermediates and for me that was a big surprise,” said Button, still fifth overall.
“I was never going to come in for inters. I didn’t think it was the right choice personally. I braved it on the slicks and it was definitely the right call. You are not always going to make the right call in these conditions and I haven’t always.”
“I lost the lead twice because I made a mistake. So I am crazy too,” said the 31-year-old.
“It was a very tough race. On the first stint on the intermediates in the wet it felt like there was no grip at all.”
Red Bull only won one of the last 5 grand prix compared to Mcclaren.
Button said the weather was not such a big factor.
“I think the reason we won today was because we were quick,” he said.
“If it didn’t rain I don’t think it would have made a lot of difference.”
Hamilton, accepted his error but was glad at least to finish fourth and stay third overall.
“We were having radio issues and I could hear my engineers but they couldn’t hear me,”he told reporters.
“I heard them say it was going to rain and it was already spitting so we opted to go for the wet tyres. It wasn’t necessarily the best call but that’s motor racing.”

Pirelli release tyre choices

Pirelli have released the tyre compounds that they are taking to the the next three races in Belgium, Italy and Singapore
“We’re learning more and more with every race in our first year of Formula One, and fine-tuning our compound choices to benefit from the valuable information that we are accumulating,” said Pirelli‘s Paul Hembery.
“We’ve got three of the most thrilling races on the entire calendar coming up, and we believe that we’ve arrived at some tyre nominations that are very well-suited to the characteristics of these very different but equally exciting circuits.
“Of course there will always be some unknown factors – such as the weather – but the choices we have made are designed to help teams maximise both their performance and their race strategy.”

Kilns found using rubber as fuel

Punjab Pollution Control Board raids found 19 brick kilns employing used rubber tyres as fuel during raids conducted on 105 of them across the state in the last week of June
The use of rubber as fuel has already been banned by government of Punjab as it is dangerous to health and causes air pollution. Many brick kilns use the tyres as fuel with a view to cut down on costs.
“For saving a few pennies, unscrupulous elements do not hesitate to pollute the environment. Cutting costs by using this rubber always results in heavy environmental pollution,” said PPCB chairman Kahan Singh Pannu

Pirelli pleased with experimental tyre

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery says that the experimental softtyres tested during Friday practice for the German Grand Prix could become next season’s medium compound.
“We’ve been pleased with what we can see so far of the performance from our experimental P Zero Yellow tyres,” Hembery said. “Although we will have to wait to hear the detailed feedback from the teams before we draw too many conclusions.
“However, we’ve seen that the performance from these new tyres is similar to the pace from the current soft tyre, but with added durability. So one option could be to use it as a medium tyre next year. The cool conditions today meant that the rapid warm-up time of the soft tyre was an important factor in performance, and we expect that to remain the case for the rest of the weekend.”

Lorry driver sleeps through robbery

Thieves have raided another parked HGV and stolen its load of tyres while its driver slept. This latest attack took place at the Barton Business Park, off the A38 in Staffordshire. According to local paper the Burton Mail, the driver of a lorry was woken by a ‘rocking’ sensation in the cab and saw four or five men who, having slashed the truck’s kerbside wagon, helped themselves toPirelli motorcycle tyres. The tyres were loaded into a white mini van, which then drove off southbound along the A38.
The Burton Mail notes the theft took place in the early hours of July 21, however Staffordshire Police has only just released details of the incident. An alcohol theft employing a similar method also occurred nearby that day, while the back of a third lorry was slashed without its contents being disturbed.
Staffordshire police reports it is unaware of the value of the tyres taken. This theft bears a number of similarities to one occurring in North Yorkshire on June 15; in that incident, thieves stole more than £16,000 worth of Pirelli passenger car and 4×4 tyres from a lorry while its driver slept in a lay-by

Michelin tyre test 2011

That’s despite manufacturers carrying out vast amounts of expensive research on its latest products. Testing procedures are incredibly rigorous, with the best performance tyres even spending a gruelling 1,000 hours at more than 186mph.
That’s why we went tyre testing to see for ourselves the importance of fitting the best tyres you can afford.  First we drove a series of BMW M3 Coupe sports cars onto a soaked skidpan at 60mph and braked as hard as we could. Each car was fitted with a different set of tyres, including two types of Michelin rubber and its competitors.
Although this was a Michelin tyre launch for its latest performance tyre, the Pilot Super Sport, but we were open minded when comparing its tyres to those of other manufacturers.
All of the tyres performed well, stopping the car in less than 27 metres in a controlled and confidence-inspiring manner. If this test had included tyres from the cheapest brands, we’re positive the car would have taken well over 30 metres to come to a halt, and have been harder to keep under control.
While 3 or 4 metres might not sound like much, it’s more than the width of a Zebra Crossing or the length of a family car.
In independent tests by the German organisation TUV featuring the Bridgestone Potenza S001,Continental Sportcontact 5P, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT, Goodyear Eagle F1 and Pirelli P Zero, only one brand of tyre out-performed the Michelin Pilot Super Sport in the wet.
For our dry tests we headed out onto the track at Estoril in Portugal in identical Porsche 911 and Audi R8 sports cars fitted with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres and its predecessor, theMichelin Pilot Sport PS2, which has been fitted as standard equipment to more than 200 models of car.
This test clearly demonstrated the incredible pace of tyre research and development, an areaMichelin spends around £440m on per year. Much of the technology featured in the Pilot Super Sport was developed for the 24 hour Le Mans endurance race, and it felt considerably more stable and gripped harder than the Pilot Sport PS2, no matter which car it was fitted to.
In independent TUV tests in the dry, the Pilot Super Sport was just ahead of all its rivals for road holding and also proved itself as the longest lasting.
One of the key features of the tyres we tested was their ability to perform consistently, even in extreme conditions. When we drove beyond the limits of grip, the resulting skid would be gradual and could be easily recovered by gentle deceleration and by steering into the direction of the skid.
We’ll be looking to undertake more tyre testing in the future, to ensure your car is on the best tyres possible. During just one day we learnt there’s more time invested in the design, chemistry and physics of big brand tyres than you’d ever imagine. The resulting difference in grip and braking can seem small on paper, but can be the difference between life and death in the most extreme situations.
