Emergency services back tyre safety month.

Emergency service workers have joined the tyre safety month awareness campaign hoping to make people more aware of how dangerous defected tyres can be.

They are hoping that by explaining situations that they have seen should show people and help them understand that more and more crashes are happening because people are not checking their tyres regularly.

Clyde Evans, senior road safety officer with Hampshire fire service, said: “We’re all responsible for making sure the cars we drive and travel in are safe – but how many of us actually do it?
“If you’d seen what I’ve seen, it gives you a different perspective on driving and road safety.

Tyre Marks Explained

Tyre Sidewall

At first glance the lettering on the side of the tyre may look complicated.
It is not meant to be that way.
The lettering explains the exact specification of the tyre you have. In short it tells you anything that you may need to know about your tyre.
From the diagram above we will try to break down what the codes and numbers really mean.
The codes on the above tyre, will be different on every tyre, due to a few main factors; the tyre width, tyre profile, tyre size and the speed rating.
The number 165 relates to the Tyre Width
It is the width of the tyre in millimetres.
The number 65 relates to the Tyre Profile
It is the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the width. This is also known as the aspect ratio.
The Letter R relates to Radial Contruction
The number 14 relates to the Tyre’s Size
It is the diameter of the tyre’s inner rim in inches
The number 79 relates to the Tyre’s Load Rating
This is the Load Capacity of the Tyre
The Letter T relates to the Tyre’s Speed Rating Value
This indicates the maximum speed for the actual tyre at full load
The E4 Mark
This is to display that the tyre has been tested as high quality by the European Regulatory Authories.

Tyresafe.com launch iPhone application.

So as its tyres safety month its a good thing that Tyresafe.com have brought out an application for the iPhone.

Users correctly put in their vehicle registration details and the application provides the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure settings in both psi and bar.

“Many drivers tell us that they don’t check their tyre pressures because they are unsure of the correct settings,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “The new TyreSafe iPhone app completely removes this problem and instantly provides drivers with their car’s tyre pressure information. So whether they’re on their driveway at home, the supermarket filling station or at the services on the motorway, iPhone users can be sure of having the correct information to hand.”

Its a very good application to have, as you know its reaching the later months of the year and thats when the bad cold weather hits and people do need to make sure they have the correcttyre pressure as if they haven’t it can cause many problems.

Pirelli have hit the track

So Pirelli have gone back to the tracks this week to test their tyres, and behind the wheel was De La Rosa.

After having the track made wet so that they can test wet weather conditions, he hit the track  asPirelli‘s new development driver.

“As we were running our intermediate and wet tyres for the very first time, effectively our programme was starting from scratch once more,” Pirelli director Paul Hembery said. “We worked through our schedule exactly as planned, and we were able to get an initial impression of our performance in wet and drying conditions. This has enabled us to identify the areas in which we are strong and the areas that we need to develop further, which is always the aim in testing.

“It’s been great working with Pedro de la Rosa, whose experience has given us a well-informed perspective on the characteristics of our tyres. So far our schedule is going exactly to plan, and we look forward to continuing our work at what is a very exciting time for us during the next test sessions as well as back at base in Milan.”

“It’s a real pleasure for me to be working with Pirelli this year, and I’m delighted to have finally had the chance to try out these tyres,” he said. “We completed all the work we wanted to do during this initial session, and now we have a clearer idea about future avenues for development.”
