Queen’s Royal Wedding Bentley has Pirelli tyres

Pirelli have updated their Facebook page to inform everyone that the Queen of England hadPirelli tyres on her Bentley.
She apparently hasn’t changed them in 8 years, not that she has been that far anyway.
“It is obviously a moment of pride, as well as proof of Italian technology’s higher quality,” he remarked after the comments during the Santa Margherita Regate. “We would like to thank whoever uses our tyres for their cars.
“Moreover, 50 % of luxury cars like Ferrari, Porsche and Bentley use Pirelli.”
They were  clearly very happy about that!

Tyre gamble in Q3 unlikely

McLaren has stopped the chances of frontrunning teams qualifying in Turkey to save all-new tyres for the f1 race.
With this weeks race in Istanbul likely to see higher levels of tyre degradation, there have been some opinions that drivers may choose to not run in parts of qualifying so they can save theirtyres for the real thing.
“The tyre degradation is going to be large factor in Turkey, and I think that will certainly be pending towards a three-stop race,” explained Prew.
“There are some benefits of having new  tyres available to you. However, I think the competitiveness of the field will force you pretty much to run your ultimate new tyres through qualifying.
“Our position would always be to take qualifying position over the new tyres in the race. I am not discounting what we did with Lewis in China, but we were fortunate to get through Q1 and Q2 with a single set of option  tyres, which allowed us to save one set of options. But I don’t think not competing in Q3 for tyre saving is the right thing to do.”
“There have been continual improvements in pretty much all areas, from the lessons learned through winter testing and the early races, as well as continued work to improve our tyre utilisation.”
“But as we have seen over the first three races, the difference between cars varies from track to track. Turkey should be a reasonably strong track for us, and developments deliver performance if we utilise performance.
“We are also conscious everyone else is aiming to improve the car at the same time. As always we hope we have done enough and more than other people.”

Happy Hamilton beats Vettel

After Lewis Hamilton having a rant last week that he wasn’t happy with loosing and blamed it upon the Pirelli tyres, but Hamilton is in a better mood this week as he came first in this weekends Grand Prix beating Vettel.
Pirelli’s Motorsport director Paul Hembery was very happy and said “The races just seem to keep on getting better and better this year! I think nobody watching really knew how it was going to finish until the very end, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve when we started our Formula One project. We saw an interesting split of strategies, with McLaren managing to make three stops work for Hamilton but Red Bull coming very close to winning with just two.”
“Compared to Malaysia we experienced a lot less degradation, with some drivers managing to get 20 laps or more out of the hard tyre. We didn’t experience an excessive amount of the toffee-like ‘marbles’ out on track and it was clear that this race was won and lost on tyre strategy. The end result was that all the leading runners were very close together at the finish, and the people who had looked after their tyres best took the top results. It’s hard to imagine how we can top this at the next grand prix in Turkey, but we’re certainly going to try to have something just as good.”

Drivers love new Michelin tyres

Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala has driven almost 350 miles during testing on the new tyre and he was happy with the results.
Michelin has done good work,” said the Finn. “The tyre seems to be very, very strong. Also, the feeling is the same as with the previous tyre. When the tyre is warm, it gives the same good feeling as the tyre before.
“Maybe it is a little bit difficult to brake and, of course, there is more weight in the tyre so you feel it when you are trying to get the car moving – it is asking for more power.
“The tyre is wearing a little bit more than the old one, but you would expect this because of the stiffer and stronger construction. The main thing is that the tyre if very strong and the feeling is almost as good as with the old one.”

Checking tyre pressure helps fuel prices

If you start or have been checking your tyre pressure regularly then you will be saving on fuel prices it has been established.
Road safety group the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) pointed out the importance of tyresand the need to keep them in good condition, as while the wheels “may be less than the size of a footprint,” it is the only thing between a vehicle and the road.
“As well as this, incorrect inflation could push fuel bills up by as much as five per cent and a 20 per cent reduction in the pressure of a tyre could reduce its useful life by as much as 30 per cent, the charity warned.”
Advising motorists, Chief Examiner at IAM Peter Rodger said “tyres should be checked weekly, when cold – and pointed out that over inflated tyres are as risky as under inflated ones”.

Trulli please with Grand Prix Pirelli tyres.

Jarno Trulli has said that he is happy with the Pirelli tyres at the Malaysian Grand Prix last Sunday.
He said that after hearing the other criticism about the tyres, he thought they were not terrible but was shocked on how much they had changed since the winter tests.
“The most important thing to be said is that every result this weekend, whether positive or negative, has a common cause: the Pirelli tyres,” Trulli wrote in his column for Repubblica newspaper.
“They’ve left us all shocked. I don’t mean they were better or worse than we had expected, I mean that they were completely different: it’s as if they have been changed since the last tests in Barcelona.”
“I think that came from a completely wrong translation because I see Pirelli did a good job from Australia,” Trulli told a news conference in Sepang. “We didn’t expect to have a problem with the tyre warm-up. There wasn’t degradation, one driver did a one-stop strategy.
“For the Australian Grand Prix the tyres behaved completely different, very well compared to the experience of winter testing.
“Some people struggled for tyre warm-up which was the case for several drivers. It shows that we have a lot to learn.
Pirelli is trying to adjust itself and give the best tyres for the conditions and circuit. The first show was pretty good for Pirelli but there is still a lot to learn.”

Alonso adds comments to Pirelli Tyre worries

Fernando Alonso has also spoken up about what he thinks about the ‘rubber bullets’ or ‘marbles’ that were flying from the tyres on Sunday at the Malayasian Grand Prix.
“It was more difficult than Australia for sure,” said Alonso. “There is some concern for places like Canada, Singapore, Monaco, that you catch a lapped car, they let you past, you go inside, you take some marbles and then on the next corner you miss the braking point and you go straight.
“Malaysia was a very wide circuit, and you can come back to the track, but there will be some difficulties in some narrow tracks. We need to be careful and we need to get used to these new things as well.”
It has come to light that there were ‘marbles’ or rubber during testing the tyres back in the winter but that was put down to the low temperature, now Pirelli know that its not the tyres, they are working on them for the next race to get them changed and improve them, as the drivers won’t be allowing this to happen to them again.

Hamilton unhappy with being 8th!

Lewis Hamilton is blaming his fellow team for his failure to win at the Grand Prix today.
“It was as terrible race,” he said. “I started second and I came eighth. I tried my best. I had four pit stops and the tyres didn’t last. I stopped before everyone else when I could have stayed out for a couple of laps more.
“Then the wrong tyres were put on. I had the option instead of the prime. For the last stint I had an old prime which didn’t last and I had to pit. It was very poor strategy but there’s nothing I can do.”
Alonso bumped into the back of Hamilton as he tried to overtake the McLaren driver. The Spaniard said afterwards: “It’s no big drama. I finished sixth anyway. There was a race incident. I tried to overtake and we touched each other. Unfortunately I broke the front wing and I had to pit again. But the next race I try again.
“It was one of those things. You try to race, to enjoy the race in the cockpit. Hopefully next time we finish with no problems.”
McLaren’s team manager, Martin Whitmarsh, said: “Lewis said a few things straight after the race which were from his view in the cockpit. He’s already smiling and laughing and when he looks back and sees the full picture I think he’ll have a different opinion.
“The penalty was disappointing and surprising. I’m not a steward. They make those sort of decisions, and that’s how it is, but a penalty to both drivers is fairly harsh.”

Pirelli tyres fail at Grand Prix

According to Scottish driver Paul Di Resta the Pirelli tyres that were used at the Malaysian Grand Prix last Sunday were not as fantastic as they’d hoped.
The tyres have been said to have had pieces flying off like rubber bullets and were hitting the drivers behind.
“There are a lot of marbles out there, maybe too many,” said the Force India driver, who finished 10th for the second successive race to keep up his point-scoring habit in his debut season. “Come the end of the race, it gets difficult to overtake.
“The other big thing is that they kept coming up and hitting me in the hands. In the middle of a fast corner, these lumps of rubber would be smacking into my hands as I turned the wheel.
“Rubber is not the softest material and if it got you in the right place, it could hurt. It happened quite a few times over the weekend and as you go into the corner, the rubber runs across thetyre and flicks up.”
Paul Hembry who is Pirelli’s motorsport director has said “I have not had those comments from the top three but if it’s an issue, we will have to confront it,” he said: “There was a lot of overtaking though. We will have to analyse all the overtaking manoeuvres but the marbles have to go somewhere and that is a difficulty for us.”

April = Bike Tyre Safety Month

So as October last year was Tyre Safety Month, April is Bike Tyre Safety Month.
Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe says ”Whilst we welcome the news that there are fewer tyre related motorbike accidents, the number is still far too high. Tyres play a crucial part, perhaps the most important role, when it comes to motorbike safety as they are the only point of contact that the bike has with the road surface.”
Which here at Jet Tyres we agree with 100%, so if you have a Motorbike/Moped then get yourtyres checked and changed regularly as the more you check them the quicker you can source the problem if there is one and its not worth the risk.
TyreSafe top tips for motorcycle tyre safety:

1. Check your tyre pressures from cold at least once a week using an accurate gauge
2. Inflate tyres to the level recommended in the manufacturer’s handbook
3. Inspect tyres for cuts, bulges, uneven wear or objects embedded into the tread pattern and replace if necessary
4. Use dust caps to keep dirt away from the valve core and to act as a secondary air seal
5. If your rims are cracked or bent they should be replaced immediately
6. Check that your tread depth is not below the legal minimum of 1mm (for bikes over 50cc)
7. Replace old or damaged valve stems
8. Select the correct type of tyre for your machine and riding style
9. Check that both tyres fitted to the bike are made by the same manufacturer and have the same tread pattern
10. Make sure that your tyre has been fitted the right way round by checking the directional arrows on the sidewall
11. When replacing tube type tyres always use a new inner tube
12. Make sure your tyre/wheel assembly is balanced correctly
13. Keep oil and grease off your tyres using detergent if necessary
14. If you are unsure on any aspect of tyre pressure or tyre condition take your bike to an approved fitting centre and speak to the experts.
